IIT Madras Study Links High Education to Cybercrime Vulnerability

A study by IIT Madras has found that highly educated professionals, including bankers, doctors, and IT workers, are frequently targeted and successfully defrauded by cybercriminals. Researchers interviewed 33 victims from metropolitan cities like Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Mumbai to understand the psychological factors behind these incidents. The study reveals that fraudsters exploit victims during periods of personal stress or life disruption, creating an urgent sense of pressure that impairs decision-making. This state of vulnerability is described by researchers as an engineered brain freeze or mind arrest.

This research challenges the assumption that digital literacy provides immunity against fraud, warning professionals that emotional and situational stress can make them primary targets for sophisticated financial scams.
