IMA Urges Caution and Warns Against Self-Medication Amid H1N1 Surge

The Indian Medical Association issued a public health advisory on Wednesday regarding a seasonal surge in Influenza A, or H1N1, during the monsoon season. The medical body urged the public to avoid self-medicating with antibiotics and antivirals, stressing that antibiotics do not treat viral infections and their misuse fuels antimicrobial resistance. Metropolitan centers such as Delhi have recorded more than 1,770 laboratory-confirmed cases, alongside reported cases in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and West Bengal. The Indian Council of Medical Research confirmed that the circulating virus is a seasonal strain with no novel genetic mutations detected, accounting for 98% of Influenza A cases in India. The IMA recommended standard preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, proper cough etiquette, and wearing masks in crowded spaces.
