IMD Forecasts Monsoon Withdrawal Starting September 19
· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
The India Meteorological Department expects the Southwest Monsoon to begin its withdrawal from Northwest India around September 19. While the retreat is approaching, regions including Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab are forecast to experience continued rainfall and thunderstorms in the interim. This year's monsoon season has recorded below-normal rainfall across the country, with significant deficits reported in states like Punjab, Bihar, and Meghalaya. Strengthening El Niño conditions have contributed to the overall rainfall shortage throughout the four-month season. The weather department links the current localized rain to a low-pressure system over north Gujarat.
Why it matters
The persistent rainfall deficit across nearly 43 percent of India threatens to keep food prices elevated as the monsoon season nears its conclusion.
