IMD Issues Red Alert for Extreme Rain in Three Tamil Nadu Districts
· India · The Hindu, LiveMint
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast heavy to very heavy rain on Sunday across large parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Theni, Dindigul and Madurai districts. A well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a depression by Sunday and a cyclonic storm by Monday morning, moving toward the Andhra Pradesh coast by Wednesday. Rainfall was recorded at 80% of Tamil Nadu's 620 monitoring stations by Saturday morning, with Burliyar receiving the highest 24-hour total of 25 cm. A second low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea is also contributing to the widespread rain.
Why it matters
Residents in red-alert districts face flash-flood risk and potential disruption to transport, power and daily life, while the developing cyclonic storm threatens coastal Andhra Pradesh by mid-week.
