IMD Predicts Cyclone Arnab to Hit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha
· India · Indian Express
The India Meteorological Department has identified a low-pressure area over the southeast Bay of Bengal that is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by October 26. The system is projected to move west-northwestwards, likely making landfall between the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. If the system develops as forecast, it will be the first cyclone of 2026 and will be named Arnab, as proposed by Bangladesh. Heavy rainfall is anticipated across Tamil Nadu, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Rayalaseema, Kerala, and coastal Karnataka until October 27. Coastal Odisha and the northern Nicobar Islands are also expected to experience very heavy rainfall on October 26 and 27.
Why it matters
The cyclone poses a direct threat to life and property in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, necessitating emergency preparedness for potential flooding and infrastructure damage. The ongoing Northeast Monsoon is expected to intensify the rainfall, increasing the risk of waterlogging across the southern peninsula.
