IMD Reports India Monsoon Rainfall Fourth Lowest Since 2001

India received 759.4 millimetres of rainfall during the June-to-September monsoon season, falling below the normal historical average of 868.6 millimetres. The India Meteorological Department stated on September 30, 2026, that the country recorded 87.4% of its long period average rainfall. This season's precipitation deficit marks the fourth lowest seasonal rainfall recorded over the country since 2001. The overall national deficit currently stands at approximately 13 per cent across the four-month monsoon period. The long period average is calculated using rainfall data averaged over a period of 30 to 50 years.
