Imran Khan Will Not Confront Pakistan Military If Released, Says Aide
· World · Hindustan Times, NDTV, Reuters
Jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan would not confront army chief Asim Munir if released, according to close aide Zulfikar Bukhari. Bukhari offered the clearest indication yet that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party could be prepared to mend ties with the military. Pakistan's Supreme Court ordered authorities to transfer the 73-year-old politician from prison to a private hospital for treatment within 48 hours. Bukhari described the ruling as a new ray of hope while confirming the party will follow instructions preventing supporters from gathering at the hospital. The government and military did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the remarks.
Why it matters
A potential rapprochement between Imran Khan's party and the military could ease one of the most intense political confrontations in Pakistan's recent history.
