Devdutt Padikkal scored his maiden Test century, finishing the opening day of the first Test at 131 not out off 178 balls at the Galle International Stadium. Vice-captain KL Rahul retired hurt due to cramps after scoring 77, while captain Shubman Gill was dismissed for 16 by spinner Prabath Jayasuriya. Rishabh Pant joined Padikkal at the crease, with the pair forging an unbeaten 52-run partnership to put India in a dominant position.
