India Adds 405 Defence Items to Positive Indigenisation List

· India · Times of India, Moneycontrol, Hindustan Times

The Department of Defence Production has notified its sixth positive indigenisation list, mandating that 405 additional weapons, systems, and sub-systems be manufactured domestically. This initiative aims to reduce import dependency for critical platforms including the Su-30MKI fighter jet, the AL-31FP engine, and armoured vehicles like the T-72 and T-90 tanks. The government estimates these items will generate Rs 3,070 crore in business opportunities for domestic manufacturers, with MSMEs expected to play a key role. Each item on the list includes a specific timeline for transitioning from imports to local production. Since August 2020, the SRIJAN Defence Portal has facilitated the indigenisation of over 15,700 items, resulting in an estimated import substitution of Rs 9,000 crore.

Why it matters

The move forces a shift in procurement for the Indian armed forces by mandating domestic sourcing for major platforms, directly impacting the order books of local manufacturers and MSMEs. It marks a significant step in the government's long-term strategy to achieve self-reliance in critical defence technology and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers.
