India and Bangladesh Likely to Discuss Resuming Cross-Border Train Services

· World · Indian Express, NDTV, Times of India

India and Bangladesh are scheduled to discuss the resumption of the Maitree Express, Bandhan Express, and Mitali Express passenger train services during a two-day Inter-Governmental Railway Meeting in Dhaka. Cross-border passenger rail links have remained suspended since political unrest toppled Sheikh Hasina's government in July 2024, though freight train services resumed in February last year after a nine-month hiatus. Bangladesh railway officials plan to propose a new rail route connecting Rajshahi with Kolkata, alongside operating the Maitree Express via the newly constructed Padma Bridge instead of the Jamuna Bridge. If both nations reach an agreement during the talks, passenger train operations could resume as early as next month following ministerial approvals. The Maitree Express connects Dhaka with Kolkata, the Bandhan Express links Khulna with Kolkata, and the Mitali Express previously operated between Dhaka and New Jalpaiguri.

Why it matters

Restoring passenger rail links will re-establish vital cross-border mobility and trade connectivity between India and Bangladesh after more than a year of suspension.
