India and Liberia Launch Maritime Safety and Seafarers Group at UNGA

India and Liberia teamed up to establish a Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers on the margins of the UNGA in New York. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar addressed the inaugural meeting alongside representatives from 23 other countries, including Russia, Germany, and Japan. Jaishankar stated that actions disrupting maritime commerce and costing innocent lives are indefensible and urged the international community to close ranks against such attacks. He recalled Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposal from the recent BRICS summit to create a Seafarers Emergency Support Network. The newly formed group comprises major ship-owning member states, countries with the largest ship registries, and nations providing the highest number of seafarers.
