India and Nepal to Use Drones to Map Dasgaja Border Encroachments

India and Nepal have agreed to deploy drones to map encroachments along the 10‑yard Dasgaja strip on their 1,880 km open border. The decision was taken at the 13th Survey Officials Committee meeting in Lucknow, chaired by deputy chiefs of the Nepal Survey Department and the Survey of India. Mapping will produce a jointly verified technical record to aid future negotiations on removal, land restoration or compensation. The move follows remarks by Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah in May that Nepal had also encroached on Indian land, prompting clarification that he referred specifically to Dasgaja issues. Nepal Survey Department spokesperson Dayanand Joshi said the drone survey will cover both cross‑border occupation and Dasgaja encroachments. Border expert Buddhi Narayan Shrestha noted his 2005 study recorded 84 Indian and 27 Nepali farmer encroachments, and said compiling a comprehensive list will take time before higher‑level officials negotiate solutions.
