India Becomes Net Exporter of Hilsa Fish to Bangladesh

· Business · Indian Express, The Hindu

India has begun exporting Hilsa fish to Bangladesh, reversing the traditional trade pattern where India typically imported the fish during the Durga Puja season. Over the past two months, approximately 500 tonnes of Hilsa have been shipped through the Petrapole land port in West Bengal. Traders expect to export an additional 150 to 200 tonnes in the coming weeks to meet demand in regions like Chattogram and Sylhet. A significant portion of the exported catch originates from the Bharuch region in Gujarat. Bangladesh has currently paused its own Hilsa exports to India.

Why it matters

This shift in trade dynamics reflects changing production and consumption patterns in the region, impacting the availability of the prized fish for consumers in both India and Bangladesh.
