INDIA Bloc Demands Return to Ballot Voting After Election Commission Controversy
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
Top leaders of the INDIA bloc met in New Delhi on Wednesday to finalise a joint protest strategy following a controversy within the Election Commission. Congress president Malligarjun Kharge outlined six key demands, including a return to paper ballot voting instead of Electronic Voting Machines. The opposition also called for using the pre-SIR electoral roll for future elections, complete transparency in roll revisions, and adequate notice before voters are removed. TMC leader Mamata Banerjee criticised the recent SIR exercise as botched-up and highlighted post-poll difficulties. Leaders from the Congress, SP, CPI, CPI(M), NCP(SP), and Shiv Sena (UBT) attended the meeting to finalise their next steps.
Why it matters
The demands directly challenge the current electoral administration system in India, setting up a major political confrontation between the opposition alliance and the central government over voting transparency and institutional accountability.
