INDIA bloc’s ‘public impeachment’ of CEC planned to avoid mocking Parliament, says The Hindu

· India · The Hindu, Times of India, NDTV

The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance will hold a ‘public impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar on Friday afternoon at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence at 10, Rajaji Marg, New Delhi, over alleged electoral manipulation through the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is likely to preside, while Kharge is likely to move the motion against the CEC, and Rahul Gandhi is expected to be the last speaker. The event is designed as a curtain-raiser for the Sunday (November 1, 2026) rally at Ramlila Maidan and will likely avoid any posters of the Prime Minister, Home Minister, or symbolic representation of the treasury benches to prevent mocking Parliament as an institution. Representatives of civil society, student organisations, and voters whose names were left off the electoral rolls are expected to attend.

Why it matters

The political stunt risks escalating tension over electoral integrity ahead of the November rally, potentially testing the opposition’s unity and the Election Commission’s independence without triggering imagery that disrespects Parliament.
