India Boosts Gas-Based Power Output by 80% Amid Evening Shortfall

India’s gas-based power output surged 80.32% in early September compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,088.64 million units. This rise is driven by evening peak demand, as solar output declines and hydropower remains constrained. Gas plants, with a total capacity of 20.1 GW, now provide 4.5–5.5 GW to meet night-time shortages, despite higher costs. Natural gas purchases for power generation jumped to 30,533 MMBtu, up from 3,750 MMBtu last year, amid a 139% spike in spot gas prices to ₹2,420/MMBtu. Peak demand hit 267–269 GW, with night-time shortfalls of 6.1–7.7 GW on September 9–10.
