India Clarifies UN Resolution Does Not Endorse Specific World Maps

India was among 164 countries that voted in favour of a September 4 UN General Assembly resolution aimed at promoting equal-area map projections. The resolution, titled 'Correct the Map', encourages the use of projections that preserve the relative sizes of landmasses to avoid the distortions common in the widely used Mercator projection. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that the vote does not constitute an endorsement of any specific map, nor does it address political cartography, international boundaries, or disputed territories. India explicitly stated this position during the voting process to ensure the resolution's purpose remained focused on cartographic representation. The US was the only country to vote against the measure, while six nations, including Ukraine and Serbia, abstained.
