India is considering removing the 100% import duty on sugar as retail prices hit record highs across the country. The crisis is largely attributed to the diversion of sugarcane supplies toward ethanol production for the government's E20 fuel blending programme. Wholesale prices in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, have surged nearly 20% since early August to Rs 5,350 per 100 kg. Retail prices have reached Rs 65 per kg in Punjab and between Rs 58 and Rs 63 per kg in cities like Mumbai and Bhopal. The government is attempting to stabilize supplies ahead of the peak festive demand season.
