India Creator Economy Booms But Earning Sustainable Livelihood Remains Elusive

· Business · Times of India, Hindustan Times

India has between 2 million and 2.5 million active digital creators whose content influences an estimated $350 billion to $400 billion in annual consumer spending, according to a 2025 report by Boston Consulting Group. That economic influence is projected to surpass $1 trillion by 2030, driven by widespread digital access and hyperlocal advertising. A separate 2024 YouTube Culture and Trends survey conducted with research firm SmithGeiger found that 83% of surveyed Indians aged 14 to 24 identify themselves as creators. However, industry analysts note that identifying as a creator is not the same as earning a sustainable living from online platforms. The rapid growth of the creator ecosystem has intensified competition for brand partnerships and advertising budgets among aspiring creators.

Why it matters

Millions of young creators face intense financial uncertainty as audience attention and advertising revenue fail to keep pace with the expanding digital workforce.
