India Expands BrahMos Missile Footprint Across South China Sea

India is expanding the footprint of its BrahMos supersonic cruise missile across the South China Sea through a strategic belt strategy. Three ASEAN nations have already signed deals for the missile, while Thailand is currently evaluating a potential purchase. The Philippines became the first buyer in 2022 through a $375 million coastal defence contract, followed by Vietnam and Indonesia. Retired Lieutenant General PR Shankar stated that the strategy aims to strengthen regional deterrence against aggressive Chinese maritime moves rather than target Beijing alone. Defense analysts note that the missile deployment increases military vulnerability for China as it operates at extended ranges in the disputed waters.
