India Expands Shakti Engine Production Facility for Helicopters in Odisha

· India · Hindustan Times, Times of India

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will inaugurate a second production line for Shakti engines at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited's facility in Koraput, Odisha, on Tuesday. The new line will raise annual production capacity from 80 Ardiden 1H1 Shakti engines at the Bengaluru facility to 180 engines. The expansion aims to meet the growing demand for indigenous helicopters, including the Dhruv advanced light helicopter and the Prachand light combat helicopter. During the inauguration, the Koraput division will also deliver its 2,000th AL-31FP engine, which powers the Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet fleet. The second production line represents an investment of ₹218 crore.

Why it matters

Boosting domestic aero-engine manufacturing capacity reduces India's reliance on foreign defense imports and strengthens the operational readiness of military helicopters and fighter jets.
