· India · Times of India, Business Standard
India and Belgium have finalised new military cooperation pacts, including collaboration on the indigenous Zorawar light tank, during a visit by Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever. The Zorawar tank, designed for high-altitude warfare, features a Belgian John Cockerill 3105 turret manufactured through a joint venture in Pune. Weighing 25 tonnes, the tank is built to counter Chinese Type 15 tanks and is deployable via IAF C-17 aircraft. The Indian Army has placed an initial order for 59 units, with a total requirement of 354 tanks to address security threats in Ladakh and other high-altitude regions.
Why it matters
The collaboration strengthens India's domestic defence manufacturing capabilities and provides critical hardware to secure high-altitude borders against regional threats.
