India Flags Abhayrab Rabies Vaccine Batch as Substandard and Potentially Spurious

India's drug regulator has flagged a batch of the widely used rabies vaccine Abhayrab as substandard and potentially spurious after it failed a potency test. The Drugs Controller General of India issued a letter on August 27 instructing state drug regulators to maintain strict vigilance over the movement and distribution of batch KE25012. The Central Drugs Laboratory in Kasauli determined that a field sample did not meet potency requirements and classified it as not of standard quality. Testing also revealed discrepancies between the sampled product and a retained reference sample regarding labelling, QR codes, cap colour, and packaging text. Indian Immunologicals previously notified regulators in January 2025 about counterfeit doses entering the market, prompting international travel alerts from the United States, Britain, and Australia.
