The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has amended its commercial communication rules to require caller-ID and call-management apps to share user-generated spam reports with telecom operators. These reports must now be fed into a blockchain-based platform used by the telecom industry to enforce anti-spam regulations. The regulator stated the move aims to broaden the data pool for tracking and curbing fraudulent communications. Truecaller, which counts over 350 million monthly active users in India, has criticized the mandate as an anti-competitive measure that forces the transfer of valuable proprietary data to telecom firms. The new rules also maintain a ban on apps automatically labeling or filtering calls from government-designated promotional and service number ranges.
