India Government Notifies Rules Allowing Flex-Fuel Vehicles Running On Up To 100% Ethanol
· Automobile · Times of India, India Today, NDTV
The Indian government has notified amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules to permit the registration of flex-fuel vehicles capable of running on 85% to 100% ethanol-blended petrol. Officials stated that the updated emission provisions include E100 alongside E85, paving the way for upcoming vehicle launches by major manufacturers. The new fuel standards are restricted to vehicles specifically designed and certified for high ethanol blends, meaning normal vehicles or those running on E20 cannot use E85 or E100. Existing vehicle owners are not required to switch fuels or modify their engines. The rollout aims to reduce fossil carbon footprints, curb tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, and lower crude oil import dependence.
Why it matters
The regulatory update clears the path for automotive manufacturers to launch high-blend flex-fuel vehicles in India, supporting national goals to cut crude import bills.
