India Has Sufficient Sugar Stocks, Prices Will Cool Down Soon, Says ISMA

The Indian Sugar Mills Association stated that India does not face a sugar shortage and that supply fundamentals remain strong. ISMA President Niraj Shirgaokar attributed recent price spikes to speculative stocking and lower production caused by weather-related issues. Retail and wholesale prices had surged by 24% to Rs 56-60 per kg, prompting the Centre to permit duty-free imports of up to 1 million tonnes of raw sugar. Meanwhile, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories estimated net sugar production for the 2025-26 season at 279 lakh tonnes. Officials expect some sugar consignments from Brazil to arrive before October 15 to bolster domestic availability.
