India Installs Powerful New Gyrotron to Advance Fusion Research

India has installed and commissioned a new 82.6 GHz, 400 kW gyrotron on the SST-1 tokamak at the Institute for Plasma Research in Gujarat. The experimental fusion machine is designed to recreate the power-generating process of stars by forcing light atomic nuclei to combine at extreme temperatures and pressure. Indian fusion experiments have previously achieved plasma temperatures exceeding 200 million degrees Celsius, roughly 20 times hotter than the Sun's core. The newly installed gyrotron injects high-frequency microwave energy into the plasma, serving as a significant upgrade over the earlier 42 GHz system. This enhanced heating capability allows researchers to maintain hotter plasma for longer periods and study its stability under controlled conditions.
