India Monsoon Ends With 13% Seasonal Deficit Due to El Nino

India's four-month June to September monsoon season concluded with an overall seasonal deficit of 13 per cent, according to the India Meteorological Department. The country received 759.4 mm of rainfall against the normal long period average of 868.6 mm. The IMD attributed the below-normal rainfall to a strong El Nino warming event in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. This marks the first time seasonal rainfall has dropped below 90 per cent of the LPA since 2015, which was similarly affected by El Nino. The World Meteorological Organization declared the onset of El Nino in June, predicting it would develop into one of the strongest episodes.

A deficient monsoon directly impacts agricultural output, rural incomes, and reservoir levels across India, posing risks to food price inflation and broader economic growth.
