India Orders Google to Remove Firebase Accounts Used for Scams

· Technology · Economic Times, Reuters, Times of India

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has directed Google to remove hundreds of accounts on its Firebase platform after identifying a pattern of criminal misuse. Officials found that scammers were using the service to impersonate major banks and distribute malware to steal financial information from Android users. The government issued notices in August for the removal of at least 57 websites and databases hosted on the platform. While Google is not accused of direct involvement, the company faces potential liability if it fails to take down the flagged links within three hours of receiving notice.

Why it matters

This directive aims to curb the rising tide of cyber fraud in India, where victims lost nearly $2.4 billion in 2025 alone.
