India Plans to Buy US Javelin Anti-Tank Missiles
· India · Times of India, Hindustan Times, India Today
India plans to acquire the Javelin anti-tank missile system from the United States, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor announced on Friday in New Delhi. The man-portable, shoulder-fired weapon is built by Lockheed Martin and RTX and offers infantry units a fire-and-forget capability, with an imaging infrared seeker and top-attack mode that strikes the weaker upper armour of tanks. Javelin has gained prominence through extensive combat use, including in Ukraine, where portable anti-tank weapons have proved decisive against armoured vehicles. For India, the system would add a mobile, precision-guided anti-armour option alongside existing indigenous and imported weapons, particularly relevant for infantry along India's long land borders. The acquisition fits into broader efforts by New Delhi and Washington to deepen defence and strategic cooperation, though the two sides have yet to disclose deal details such as quantities, cost, or delivery timelines.
Why it matters
The Javelin purchase would give Indian infantry a proven, portable anti-armour capability suited to contested border terrain, while signalling a deeper US-India defence partnership at a time when both countries are expanding strategic cooperation.
