India Prioritises Predictable Climate Finance, Equitable Transition at COP31
· India · The Hindu, LiveMint
India will advocate for predictable climate finance, technology transfer, and nationally determined approaches to climate mitigation and adaptation at the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP31) in Antalya, Turkey. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav stated that developed countries must fulfill their financial obligations to developing nations, ensuring finance is largely public, concessional, and does not increase debt. India opposes language suggesting "fossil fuel cuts or phase-out" and new, top-down mitigation targets for developing countries, as it is already increasing renewable energy and forest cover. India will also seek the continuation of the Just Transition Work Programme, which aims to reskill fossil-fuel sector workers for green jobs.
Why it matters
India's stance at COP31 is crucial for shaping global climate policy, particularly regarding financial support for developing nations and the approach to fossil fuel transitions. The outcome could significantly influence India's own climate action and economic development, impacting millions dependent on traditional energy sectors.
