India’s engineering education system has expanded rapidly since 2000, creating a large national capacity of engineering graduates. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said a mere degree does not prepare graduates for the job market, highlighting a gap between education and employability. Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s remarks on the quality of engineering graduates drew criticism, underscoring concerns about employability. The expansion was driven by the Y2K‑driven demand for software professionals, leading to growth of INIs, NITs, IIITs and thousands of public and private engineering colleges. However, while access has improved, the system faces uneven outcomes, especially as generative AI changes learning needs and assessment.
