India Rebukes UN Over Inaccuracies in Counter-Terror Report on D-Company
· World · Times of India, India Today
New Delhi strongly pushed back against United Nations special rapporteur Ben Saul for describing fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim's D-Company as an India-based criminal group in a counter-terrorism report. Raghoo Puri, first secretary at India's Permanent Mission to the UN, raised the objections during a meeting of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly. Puri criticised the factual errors in the report and warned that a lack of accountability for UN experts undermines the credibility of the world body. He pointed out that Ibrahim and his organisation have been wanted in India for terror attacks since 1993, a detail documented in the UN Security Council's Al-Qaeda sanctions listing under the 1267 regime. Puri condemned the omission of these facts as incompetence that causes tremendous harm to the organisation.
Why it matters
The diplomatic pushback underscores India's zero-tolerance stance on international bodies mischaracterising cross-border criminal and terrorist networks.
