India Receives $12 Billion in Semiconductor Investment Proposals

· Business · Indian Express, Bloomberg

The Indian government has received investment proposals worth $11 billion to $12 billion under the second phase of its semiconductor manufacturing programme. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the figures at the Semicon India 2026 conference in New Delhi on Thursday. These commitments cover various segments of the chip supply chain, including equipment, materials, gases, chemicals, and substrates. The investments are expected to materialize over the next two to three years, though the specific companies involved have not yet been named. The India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 provides government subsidies to support the development of a domestic chip ecosystem.

Why it matters

These investments are critical to reducing India's reliance on semiconductor imports, which are projected to reach $240 billion annually by 2035 if current trends persist.
