India Rejects J&K Reference in OIC Communiqué

India rejected references to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir in a joint communiqué released by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Contact Group on Jammu and Kashmir after its meeting in New York. The statement came hours after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised the issue during his address to world leaders. India said the OIC has no standing to pronounce on matters it described as strictly internal and said Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India. The communiqué, issued by a 57-member group that also includes Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan and Niger, supported Kashmiri self-determination, called for the release of political prisoners and urged implementation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Why it matters
India formally challenged the communiqué and rejected the group’s position on Jammu and Kashmir. The statement came shortly after Erdogan raised Kashmir at the UN General Assembly.
