India rejects ‘politically motivated, highly malicious references’ in remarks by UNCERD

India has rejected observations made by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, labelling the references as politically motivated and highly malicious. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal issued the response after the UN Committee raised concerns regarding reports of large-scale violations by law enforcement officials against ethnic, ethno-religious, indigenous, and tribal groups. The Committee's press note specifically highlighted Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, particularly Dalits, non-citizens, and an increase in incidents involving Bengali-speaking Muslims in India. The remarks followed India's 11th periodic review under ICERD, which took place in Geneva on August 11-12. The Indian delegation for the review was led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta.
