India Rejects Unverified UN Allegations Against Its Human Rights Record

· India · Hindustan Times, The Hindu

India strongly opposed attempts at the United Nations to use unverified allegations and incomplete statistics to portray the country negatively. Speaking at the UN General Assembly's Third Committee on Tuesday, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs Barkha Tamrakar asserted that human rights must not serve as an instrument for political pressure or selective targeting. Tamrakar stated that India engages with international human rights mechanisms based on dialogue, cooperation, and transparency, urging delegations to cite reports faithfully rather than inflate communications into verdicts. The remarks followed concerns raised earlier in the week by more than 20 UN human rights experts in Geneva regarding police responses to youth-led protests in New Delhi. New Delhi had previously rejected as hearsay a UN expert report alleging retaliation against participants in a satirical political movement.
