India Rejects World Bank-Backed Indus Waters Ruling as Invalid

India has rejected an award issued by a World Bank-constituted Court of Arbitration concerning interim measures and the status of the Indus Waters Treaty. New Delhi maintained that the arbitral body was illegally constituted in patent breach of the treaty terms and possesses no jurisdiction over sovereign Indian decisions. The government stated that India has never recognised the existence of the court or participated in its proceedings. Officials reiterated that India's decision to hold the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance remains in force. The ruling will have no effect on infrastructure projects currently being undertaken by India.
Why it matters
The rejection deepens the legal stalemate over a critical cross-border river treaty between India and Pakistan, reinforcing New Delhi's refusal to submit to external arbitration.
