India Reviews Airline Security Protocols After Flydubai Cockpit Stabbing
· World · Hindustan Times, Indian Express
The Indian government is considering issuing new security advisories to domestic airlines following an incident where an Indian pilot, Capt Smit Machchhar, was stabbed by his co-pilot on a flydubai flight. The flight, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying 174 passengers, experienced a sudden 14,300ft plunge over northern Saudi Arabia before landing safely in Tabuk. Capt Machchhar reportedly subdued the co-pilot after being attacked with a crash axe, an emergency tool located in the cockpit. Civil aviation secretary Samir Kumar Sinha stated that the government is currently conducting internal deliberations to determine if additional security measures are required for Indian carriers. The injured pilot has since been moved to Abu Dhabi for further care.
Why it matters
The incident raises urgent questions about cockpit security and the accessibility of emergency tools, potentially leading to stricter safety mandates for Indian airlines.
