India's 'Cockroach' Protesters Set to Return to Delhi Despite Police Crackdown
· India · BBC News
Thousands of youth-led protesters belonging to the Cockroach Janta Party are scheduled to gather at Central Park in Connaught Place, Delhi, on Friday. The upcoming demonstration follows the jailing of two CJP leaders for entering Jantar Mandar, a protest site recently declared off-limits by police. What began as an online campaign against unemployment has evolved into broader protests over examination paper leaks and a sweeping revision of electoral rolls known as Special Intensive Revision. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke has named the march Lehra Do Tiranga and stated he is prepared to risk arrest himself. The Delhi High Court declined to pass an order restraining the CJP after a local trader filed a petition citing potential disruptions to business and traffic.
Why it matters
The movement directly challenges the election commission and the federal government over electoral roll revisions that critics claim have removed more than 130 million names.
