India’s Drug Regulator Plans Digital Portal for Batch-Level Test Reports

India’s drug regulator is developing a digital platform to provide public access to batch-level quality-test reports for medications. The initiative aims to improve transparency in the $60-billion pharmaceutical industry by moving beyond the current system of only reporting drugs that fail quality standards. This proposal follows a May incident in Kota, Rajasthan, where five women died after receiving spurious oxytocin injections. The plan was discussed in September by the Drugs Controller General of India and is currently under further review. Currently, manufacturers perform mandatory quality tests but are not required to share these results with supply chain intermediaries.
