India's First Indigenous Bullet Train B28 Undergoes Squeeze Test in Bengaluru

· Automobile · Times of India, Moneycontrol

India's first indigenous high-speed train, the B28, has successfully undergone a structural body shell test, known as the squeeze test, at BEML's Bengaluru facility. The safety assessment evaluates whether the eight-coach train's car body can withstand heavy external forces and pressure without structural failure during a collision. Designed for an operating speed of 249 kmph and testing up to 275 kmph, the prototype is expected to be ready in less than six months. Railways plan to begin trial runs on the 100-km Surat-Vapi section of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai High Speed Rail corridor by May-June 2027. Commercial operations on the stretch are scheduled to start in August 2027, with the full 508-km corridor targeted for completion by December 2030.

Why it matters

The successful safety testing of the B28 train marks a key milestone for India's indigenous high-speed rail manufacturing and the upcoming Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor.
