Hydropower generation across India fell 12% year on year during the first three weeks of September. This marks the fifth consecutive monthly decline, driven by dry conditions associated with the El Niño weather pattern. The drop in clean energy output has forced coal-fired thermal power plants to absorb a larger share of the country's electricity demand. India's power shortage has consequently surpassed typical summer levels as a result of the constrained renewable capacity.
