India's peak power demand touched 269 gigawatts on September 10, setting a record-high electricity consumption level for the month of September. This unusual surge nearly matches the year's highest peak of 270 gigawatts recorded during the peak summer month of May. Power sector experts attribute the elevated demand to persistent high temperatures, deficient rainfall, and increased irrigation needs driven by El Niño weather conditions. The India Meteorological Department forecasted that monthly average maximum temperatures would remain above normal alongside below-normal rainfall at less than 91 per cent of the long-period average. This unseasonal demand spike strains the country's power infrastructure as cooling and agricultural requirements peak simultaneously.
