· Business · India Today, Times of India
India's retail inflation, measured by the Consumer Price Index, rose to 4.82% in August 2026 from 4.45% in July. The increase was primarily driven by a rise in food inflation, which climbed to 5.95% from 5.52% the previous month. Higher prices for onions, garlic, and ginger were identified as key contributors to the food basket's upward trend. Data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation shows that rural inflation reached 5.23%, while urban inflation stood at 4.31%.
Why it matters
Rising food prices directly impact the household budgets of Indian consumers and may influence future monetary policy decisions by the RBI.
