· Business · Times of India, Moneycontrol, Reuters
India's overall trade deficit narrowed to $9.41 billion in August 2026 from $11.62 billion in the same month last year. Overall exports, including merchandise and services, grew 25.41% year-on-year to an estimated $82.68 billion, outpacing imports which rose to $92.09 billion. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal stated that export growth momentum accelerated further during the month, supported by engineering goods, petroleum products, chemicals, and textiles. Merchandise exports increased 26.12% to $43.81 billion, while services exports reached $38.87 billion. Meanwhile, gold imports declined sharply by 57.7% to $2.3 billion compared to $5.4 billion a year earlier.
Why it matters
A narrowing trade deficit driven by robust export growth relieves pressure on the current account and supports macroeconomic stability, directly influencing currency valuations and domestic industrial sectors.
