India's Unemployment Rate Holds at 5% in August on Rural Job Gains

· Business · LiveMint, Hindustan Times

India's overall unemployment rate remained steady at 5% in August as an easing in rural joblessness offset a slight rise in urban unemployment. According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey bulletin released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Tuesday, urban unemployment rose to 6.8% from 6.7% in July. Rural unemployment declined to 4.1% from 4.5% in July, driven by decreases among both men and women. The overall labour force participation rate edged higher to 55.6% in August from 55.4% in the previous month. The worker population ratio also rose to 52.8%, supported by increased workforce participation in rural districts.

Why it matters

The monthly labour survey provides a key gauge of domestic employment trends, showing that rural job gains continue to balance out rising urban unemployment across India.
