India's Water Reserves Hit 70%, Decade Low as Monsoon Ends

Water storage in 178 key reservoirs across India has dropped to 70% of total capacity, below the 10-year decadal average of 76.62%, according to the Central Water Commission's September 24 report. The figure also trails 2025's 79% for the same period, as the southwest monsoon season ends on September 30. South India faces the steepest decline, with reserves at just 50% against 87.25% last year, after receiving 23% below-normal rainfall. Northern India's 11 reservoirs have fallen from 92.3% to 62%, while eastern reservoirs stand at 73%.
Why it matters
The deficit coincides with drought declarations in Maharashtra and Karnataka, directly threatening drinking water supplies, irrigation, and hydropower generation for tens of millions of people in affected states.
