India sends more aid, looks at bailey bridges to help Nepal efforts

Rescue teams searched mud-filled valleys in north Nepal on Thursday for survivors a day after flash floods killed 359 people, with India dispatching additional aid and evaluating the deployment of bailey bridges to support relief operations. The MEA said 288 Indians remained missing and around 200 others were stranded on the Chinese side of the Sino-Nepal border, with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar holding a high-level meeting with officials and envoys. Over 1,000 people have been moved to safety, 60 per cent of them from the worst-hit Rasuwa district. Authorities in Nepal and China are now on alert after a Chinese warning, relayed via China Central Television, that a barrier lake holding around 2 million cubic metres of water has formed on the Tibetan side near the Chhochen and Purepu Tsangpo rivers, with another 3 million cubic metres expected over the next three days.
Why it matters
Hundreds of Indian pilgrims and travellers en route to Kailash Mansarovar are caught in the disaster zone, and a potential breach of the Tibet-side barrier lake threatens a second wave of flooding along the Trishuli river basin that could worsen the humanitarian crisis and complicate cross-border evacuation.
