India Smartphone Shipments Fall 26 Percent in Third Quarter
· Technology · Times of India, NDTV
India's smartphone market experienced a sharp contraction as shipments plunged 26% to 35.8 million units in July–September, marking the lowest third-quarter volume since 2016 according to Omdia. Higher prices deterred buyers from upgrading and prompted manufacturers to curb supplies ahead of the festive season. Samsung displaced Vivo at the top by shipping 6.7 million phones, supported by its affordable Galaxy A-series, cashback offers, and extended financing plans. Vivo's shipments dropped 34% to 6.4 million units, while Xiaomi fell 28% to 4.7 million units due to component costs and pricing trade-offs. OPPO ranked third with 4.9 million units and Apple took fifth place with 3.9 million phones driven by demand for the iPhone 16 and base iPhone 17.
Why it matters
Indian consumers faced higher device costs and limited entry-level options during the festive shopping period, while major brands adjusted inventory and pricing strategies to manage weaker demand.
